Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
Vacancies exist for one part-time dietitians within Nutrition and Food Services, VA Iowa City Health Care System, Iowa City, Iowa . One of the positions will be assigned as the dietitian to serve as the medical nutrition therapy expert on an interdisciplinary Patient-Aligned Care Team (PACT) comprised of physicians, pharmacist, social workers, behavior health spe! cialist, nurses, and other allied health professionals. Dietitian is responsible for planning; developing and directing all nutritional care activities for PACT patients, including prevention, wellness and chronic disease management. Incumbent conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients. Develops and implements an individualized plan for medical nutrition therapy. Provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups either face-to-face or through secure messaging or telehealth. Conducts annual wellness screen. Participates in community outreach to Veterans. Incumbent proactively engages in Performance Improvement by monitoring and initiating corrective actions and medical nutrition therapy for patients with high-risk HgA1C, LDL, HTN and obesity while working collaboratively with the pharmacist, social worker and provider to improve patient outcome. Incumbent supports the mission and coordinates nutritional care with other health care providers, the vetera! n, the veteranÂ's family and the community.

The other Dietitia! n is the medical nutrition expert responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutritional care activities for assigned patients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. Incumbent supports the mission and coordinates nutritional care with other health care providers, the veteran, the veteranÂ's family and the community. The Dietitian may be scheduled and assigned to a specific nutrition practice area, and must possess the required knowledge and skills in order to perform the functions required of that position. Incumbent conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients at nutritional risk. Develops and implements an individualized plan for medical nutrition therapy in accordance with the patientÂ's medical program goals and objectives. Assesses educational needs and provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups. Supports Performance Improvement activities by participating in the development of nutritional care! indicators, evaluation criteria, collecting continuous quality improvement data, monitoring outcomes and initiating corrective actions. Serves as the nutrition expert on the interdisciplinary treatment team which includes physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Citizenship: Must be a Citizen of the United States
  • Education: The individual must have earned a minimum of a bachelorÂ's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, and fulfilled each of the following criteria:
  • Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE)
  • Completed a CADE accredited supervised practice program.
  • Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), ! the credentialing branch of the American Dietetic Association (ADA)
  • Registration: All applicants must be registered with the CDR
  • Non-registered applicants who otherwise meet the minimum requirements in the basic qualification standard may be appointed as a graduate dietitian. Failure to obtain CDR registration during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment. GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-9

(a) Experience or Education. At least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, or education equivalent to 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or masterÂ's or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited university or college in the field of dietetics or closely related field. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1 . Ability to plan and organize work of conside! rable difficulty and responsibility under minimal supervision.

(c) For Clinical Dietitian Positions, the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities must be demonstrated:

1 . Ability to participate in research and performance improvement studies.

2 . Knowledge of, and ability to, apply the basic principles of enteral and parenteral nutrition support.

3. Knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical dietetics and medical nutrition therapy in order to plan, develop, and independently coordinate medical nutrition therapy intervention, interdisciplinary care plans, and nutrition education activities.

GS-11

(a) Experience or Education . At least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, or education equivalent to 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited university or coll! ege in the field of dietetics or closely related field. In addition, th! e candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1 . Knowledge of basic investigative processes and techniques in order to participate in the design of studies, collect data, interpret findings, and translate results into written and oral communication.

(c) For Clinical Dietitian Positions, the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities must be demonstrated:

1 . Knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical dietetics and medical nutrition therapy for patients with complex medical conditions in order to plan, develop, and coordinate medical nutrition therapy intervention, interdisciplinary care plans, and nutrition education activities.

2 . Knowledge of complex areas of clinical nutrition including management of critically ill and malnourished patients, and ability to apply medical nutrition therapy to patients with multiple co-morbidities.

3 . Ability to act as a ! mentor/consultant for health care providers including registered dietitians, dietetic interns, nurses, physicians, medical students, and allied health professionals.

4 . Knowledge of complex areas of medical nutrition therapy for weight management, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and functional nutrition.

Additional certification and training preferred: Certification of Training in Adult Weight Management, Board Certification as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics, Certified Diabetes Educator, Certification of Training as a Health Coach and Motivational Interviewing.
