The Informatics Pharmacist is an expert in human factors, patient safety, and the use of technology to optimize care delivery processes and effectively communicate patient care activity. The Informatics Pharmacist specializes in the medication process, from ordering to administration, and is responsible for effective process design, development, and implementation of the Electronic Medical Record and Clinical Decision Support. As well, this role supports pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other clinicians as the resource for requests related to information system changes and additions related to medication use. The Informatics Pharmacist demonstrates independent decision making as appropriate in evaluation of requests for system improvements and determines feasibility and advisability of system changes. The Informatics Pharmacist works closely with clinicians, departmental leadership, Quality, Patient ! Safety, Accreditation and Licensure Departments and Informatio! n Systems staff to clarify needs, prioritize requests, design workflow to fit with electronic systems, and execute change and facilitate adaptation to the Electronic Medical Record. The informatics pharmacist will be a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents and have an active teaching role in the department with matters related to medication use informatics.

Key Areas of Responsibilities and Specific Job Tasks

Pharmaceutical Care Operations

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of the medication use information systems.
  • Work with members of the pharmacy team and other departments to implement systems for patient care.
  • Assist with answering help desk tickets and phone calls.
Provide Education

  • Education new pharmacy staff on the use of the computer systems/information system technology.
  • Provide education related to upgrades and/or other changes to the pharmacy computer sy! stem.
  • Provide education related to other information system technology utilized in the department.
  • Serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents
Health Care System Improvement

  • Evaluate problems/concerns identified by staff to determine a safe and effective resolution.
  • Assist with development of mechanisms to monitor charges and other financial data from the computer system.
  • Participate in the development and monitoring of pharmacy practice standards for the department of pharmacy.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of new programs and services.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education

  • Assist with utilizing the computer system to help ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Monitoring of data to ensure accuracy.
Education Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree. ! Experience Required:
Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Residency or minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a complex clinical pharmacy environment.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Ability and willingness to act as a preceptor is required.

Job related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required.

Job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work environment is required Certifications:
Licensure as a Pharmacist by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy is required by start date.

Desirable Qualifications:
Job related experience in information systems, specifically related to software implementation is desirable.

A PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is desirable.

Experience at an academic health care center is desirable.

A PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics Residency is highly desirable.

Experience with automation/ techno! logy project management and EPIC electronic health record is highly desirable.
