The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for the overall direction and operation of the Pharmacy Department. Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions Ensures the integrity and maintenance of an adequate medication supply and ensures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients. Ensures that all medication procurement, preparation, and dispensing practices within the department comply with established federal, state, hospital, and departmental guidelines and regulations.
Develop, justify, lead, and manage programs that improve the quality of pharmacy services, improve medication-use safety, and support the quality improvement plan of the organization. Develops and implements short-term and long-term strategic plan for the pharmacy department that supports the mission and goals of the organization. Integrate pharmacy services with other hospital departments a! nd the medical staff to establish multidisciplinary approach to improving patient care and to assure cost savings for the hospital. Prepares, monitors, and administers the pharmacy services operations budget. Ensures that the department’s operating margin is maintained. Meets approved Operating Expense budget or accounts for variances.
Seeks innovative ways to reduce/contain costs and ensure quality services.
Assures that pharmacy computer systems and technology are contemporary, functional, and appropriately integrated with the other systems within the pharmacy and hospital. Consults with, advises and acts as a general liaison between the hospital and medical staff on medication usage and application. Provides guidance and assistance in the development of the drug formulary and ongoing Medication Usage Review in conjunction with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Develops a high level of morale and motivation among Pharmacy employees that enables the employ! ee to work together toward common objectives by recognizing organizational lines within the department; keeps employees informed of matters affecting their work and interests; interprets and explains hospital policies, procedures, and department objectives and seeks comments and suggestions from employees. Determine job objectives, work methods and performance standards; review their performance relative to departmental objectives discussion appraisal with each employee and performance; authorize and communicate salary changes, promotions, transfers, discipline and discharge and administer all other personnel actions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities High level of clinical competence and leadership skills necessary for effective management of the department. Strong technical knowledge of computer applications and other pharmacy technology resources. Professional Experience
10 years of hospital experience, preferred. Minimum 3 years in a management position, requ! ired. Education
Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Scien! ce (BS) degree in pharmacy, required. Masters of Business Administration (MBA) or Masters of Health Administration (MHA), preferred. Licensure, Certification, Registration
Current Pharmacist licensure in the State of Iowa required.
